Time Out New York Directors Yolanda García Serrano and Juan Luis Iborra. 2000. N/R. 108mins. “Winning…zesty Spanish farce spreads the magic.” In Spanish, with subtitles. Concha Velasco, Elisa Matilla. An unassuming spot along Madrid's Plaza del Sol, the titular Kilometer 0 functions a lot like Hollywood Boulevard in Pretty Woman—it's where, thanks to screenwriting intervention, mismatched souls just happen to find that special person their lives had been missing. In a typical American entry, Km 0's powers would be concentrated on two gorgeous people who hardly need the help, and the place's significance would be diluted into cutesy banality. This zesty Spanish farce, however, spreads the magic among a slew of characters who actually deserve the attention.—NK |
